Mucin clots from microgram amounts of hyaluronic acid.

چکیده
The appearances and nature of mucin complexes have been studied intensively with synovial fluid and similar concentrations of hyaluronic acid, but there is a paucity of information about mucin complexes precipitated from very dilute hyaluronic acid (for example, 2 to 20 Ktg./ml.), which can probably be attributed to the rarity of natural solutions of this order except in bacterial and cellculture fluids.

Hyaluronate in normal human synovial fluid.
Studies on hyaluronate in normal human synovial fluid have been hindered by the high viscosity and small volume of fluid available. Reports on hyaluronate levels in normal synovial fluid, in which a number of different methods have been used, have shown discordant results (1-4). Several methods were used in the present study to determine the hyaluronate content of normal synovial fluid. Weighin...

A characteristic property of synovial fluids is the formation of a mucin clot when a weak acid is added. The physical character of the clot may be of some aid in the diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis (Ropes, Bennett, Cobb, Jacox & Jesser, 1957; Ropes & Bauer, 1953). The clot has also been used as a preliminary step in the isolation of hyaluronic acid (Meyer, Smyth & Dawson, 1939) and its hexosa...

Sir, Mucin is a jelly-like amorphous mixture of glycosaminoglycans, mainly hyaluronic acid and dermatin sulphate bound to small amounts of chondroitin sulphate and heparin sulphate. Mucinous infiltration of the skin occurs in disorders in which mucin accumulates either diffusely or focally. The disorders either affect the skin only or are related to systemic disease. Follicular mucinosis can be...
متن کاملA turbidimetric method for the assay of hyaluronidase.
A variety of methods have been devised for the assay of the enzyme hyaluronidase. These may be divided into four types: (a) measurement of the “spreading effect” in the skin of rabbits and guinea pigs (1, 2), (b) reduction of viscosity (3,4), (c) prevention of mucin clot formation (5), and (d) chemical measurement of total reducing substances, N-acetylglucosamine, or glucuronic acid liberated o...
متن کاملConcentration of hyaluronic acid in synovial fluid.
ISOHE (1) HAS DESCRIBED a color reaction produced by the addition of alcoholic carbazole to uronic acids previously heated in 87% sulfuric acid. The purpose of the present report is to apply a modification of this method to the determination of hyaluronic acid in synovial fluid. The concentration of mucin in synovial fluid has been determined by the turbidity of the mucin clot (2) or by the che...
